LCD Televisions are much slimmer than a traditional CRT television, and so take up much less room. As a result of this, LCD televisions can be wall mounted or placed right up against the wall without intruding too much into a room. This allows for larger LCD TVs that take up much less space, and means that the television doesn’t have to be the focal point of the room. Unlike a large screen CRT Television that is physically huge and protrudes far into a room and reduces the space for furniture, a wall mounted LCD television can look more like a mirror and be understated, allowing plenty of room for a bigger sofa, or more armchairs. With some LCD TV sets just 3” deep, they take up hardly any room.
Initially, LCD televisions were not perceived to be as good as plasma televisions for large screens. Plasma technology was already proven, and more cost effective than a LCD television. Early LCD Televisions also experienced a ghosting effect when displaying fast moving images from games consoles or sport. As a result of this LCD televisions were not quite as good as CRT Televisions. However, LCD Television technology kept progressing. The widespread use of LCD television technology for computer monitors meant that LCD televisions improved in quality and performance, and fell in price, making them more attractive to buyers. The major LCD television manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Sharp have continually managed to improve LCD television technology and produce increasingly larger TVs.
With the introduction of HDTV (High Definition TV), LCD televisions are becoming more popular and are rapidly replacing CRT televisions in the home. It is almost impossible to buy a large screen CRT television these days, as LCD television technology totally dominates. Now that an LCD TV can have a larger screen and a better picture, but be physically smaller than its CRT counterpart, there is no reason not to choose an LCD TV. Screen sizes over 60” are becoming more common, and more affordable, and LCD televisions are now produced with a screen size of up to 108”. Whilst these very large screen LCD TVs are still expensive, the prices are falling rapidly. LCD TVs are ideal for use with HDTV and offer a clear sharp picture that takes advantage of the other additional features provided by HDTV broadcasts.
LCD television technology nowadays provides a wider viewing angle, so that the viewer doesn’t have to sit directly in front of the LCD television. The ghosting effect of the original LCD televisions has been removed thanks to increases in the response time and the refresh period. 100 HZ LCD TVs are now available which doubles the refresh rate of the LCD panel to provide a substantially better picture.
LCD TVs work by shining a light source through a liquid that contains crystals which is held by two polarised screens and by varying the quantity of light, the correct image is displayed. Some LCD television manufacturers are experimenting using additional colours in the optical colour filter array. This will allow the LCD television to produce more colours and make the picture even more stunning.
When choosing an LCD television it is wide to look for a model that meets your current and future needs, and is compatible with current and future technology. LCD Televisions are available with built in Freeview tuners, which means that a separate set-top box is not required. Integrated surround sound is standard in some LCD Televisions, and ensures that realistic sound is produced. Films and sports can benefit from surround sound, and really involve the viewer resulting in a much more authentic watching experience. Some LCD Televisions even have built in memory card slots, so that pictures from a digital camera can be viewed on screen without the need for a computer. LCD computer monitors are available with a built in TV tuner, so that the monitor can be used an LCD TV, and vice versa. This means that a separate LCD TV and monitor are not required.
For people considering a new television, an LCD television is a wise choice, and as the technology improves, the prices fall. An LCD television represents a good investment that should last many years. Why not find out more and see which LCD Television meets your needs? |
